Today marks the beginning of the across-the-board spending cuts called the sequester. It is unfortunate that in Washington, nobody can agree to make the spending cuts needed to replace the sequester. Oklahomans have seen through the ratcheted-up political rhetoric coming from both the White House and Congress. Dysfunction in the federal government and the “us vs. them” mentality has brought us close to the sequestration deadline. Resorting to these types of cuts is government at its worst. Implemented in 2011 under the Budget Control Act, as what was to be a last resort if all else failed, sequestration is an across the board cut to federal spending. Exempt from cuts are the safety net programs like Social Security, Medicaid, military and civilian retirement, food stamps, most low-income and veterans programs.

Today the House of Representatives approved H.R. 444 the “Require a Plan Act” by a vote of 253-167. This bill would direct that the President to produce a budget that balanced the federal budget within 10 years. If he fails to do so, he would then be required to provide a supplemental budget plan by April 1, 2013 that would identify in which fiscal year their plan would be balanced.
