Mullin' It Over Column
America is Too Great for Socialism
By Congressman Markwayne Mullin
Washington, February 6, 2019
In his State of the Union address, President Trump asked Americans to choose greatness. The guests of the White House depicted that message, too. Buzz Aldrin, the astronaut who planted the American Flag on the moon, was in attendance to represent the dominant role the United States played in the Space Race. Irving Locker, Herman Zeitchik, and Private Joseph Reilly, three soldiers who landed on foreign soil on D-Day or shortly thereafter, were in the audience to display the courage of Americans in the face of war and evil.
Life is full of choices and at a turning point in our country’s history, President Trump made a plea that Republicans and Democrats choose greatness. America has always been destined for greatness. But the way in which we allow individual Americans to pursue their own greatness is what sets our government above the rest.
President Trump touched on many ways in which our country can aspire to this greatness, but during the State of the Union, I was most taken with his comments on socialism. I supported them wholeheartedly. I was most surprised by some of my Democratic colleagues’ reaction to socialism.
“America was founded on liberty and independence, and not government coercion, domination, and control,” President Trump told the House chamber. “We are born free and we will stay free. Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.”
The Democrats’ radical agenda items like Medicare-for-all and free education for all are not only outrageous, but dangerous. Never mind that Medicare-for-all would cost an estimated $32.6 trillion in first 10 years, the socialist Democrats are all in. They have fully embraced socialism and favor taking power away from the American people in order to give it to the federal government.
Venezuela is one example of a socialist country that President Trump mentioned in his address. Recently, the United States recognized the rightful and legitimate head of Venezuela, President Guaido due to the country’s ongoing turmoil. Under the socialist Maduro regime, the country’s wealth has crashed and the freedom of its citizens has plummeted. Venezuela is in disrepair after years of Maduro’s socialist policies.
America is better than ‘one size fits all’ policies and a theory that inspires zero competition and idleness. Government-run health care? Education for all on the taxpayer’s dime? Doesn’t sound like greatness to me.
