Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-2) today commented on the upcoming 41st anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, and he called upon people to pray and work for an end to abortion.
“Due to this Supreme Court opinion from 1973, more than 55 million children’s lives have been lost to abortion and they never had a chance to live, to dream or to grow up and do an untold number of great things in this world,” Mullin said. “That we are marking yet another anniversary of this tragic legal decision is a sad time for our nation.”
The father of five children, including adopted twin girls, Mullin said he will always be a voice for the sanctity of life because he knows that life is a sacred gift from God and should be protected by law.
The Most Rev. Edward J. Slattery, Bishop of Tulsa, underscored the importance of life by citing the Catechism of the Catholic Church 2273.
“The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and the political authority. These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state; they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights one should mention in this regard every human being’s right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception until death.”
“Under our system of Government, all of us are responsible and accountable for the laws and policies of our nation,” said Tony Lauinger, State Chairman of Oklahomans for Life. “We cannot wash our hands, and claim it is somebody else’s fault. We live in a democratic republic – government ‘by the people.’ The fact that 55 million babies have been killed since the Roe v. Wade abortion decision is ‘on us.’ We must restore protection for the ‘inalienable’ right to life.”
