TULSA WORLD: Markwayne Mullin slams 'Pelosi Democrats' on health care bill

Second District Congressman Markwayne Mullin slammed “Nancy Pelosi Democrats” on Wednesday for what he said is pointless obstruction of the House Republican health-care reform bill.

Democrats say they are protesting the bill being heard in committee without a Congressional Budget Office fiscal analysis.

Mullin, as a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, is among those getting a first shot at shaping the American Health Care Act, the Obamacare “repeal and replace” bill submitted earlier this week.

“Nancy Pelosi Democrats — I call them Nancy Pelosi Democrats because some of the Democrats are with us — are making everything as difficult as possible,” Mullin said by phone during a break in what promised to be a marathon committee markup session.

Mullin and news reports said committee Democrats took the unusual step Wednesday of requiring the bill to be read in its entirety, which took more than an hour. Democratic members have also produced more than 100 amendments to the bill, which Mullin said would extend the markup through the night and into Thursday evening.

“I don’t know if they can last that long, but I know I can,” Mullin said.

Mullin remained supportive of the bill despite attacks on it from all sides and downplayed Republican opposition to the bill.

“There are going to be two choices when we vote on this bill,” Mullin said. “You can vote yes, to get us moving in the right direction, or you can vote no, which means you’d rather continue with Obamacare.”

Mullin is not among Republicans who believe the proposal does not go far enough fast enough in rolling back the controversial 2010 Affordable Care Act.

“We don’t want to pull people off health care who have it,” Mullin said. “It’s a very complicated process. It’s going to take awhile to untie all the pieces and put health care back in the hands of the people, where it belongs.”
