Supporting Our Foster Youth
Washington, May 4, 2022
Please join me in recognizing May as National Foster Care Awareness Month. As a father of six, three of which came into our lives through the blessing of adoption, this is an issue that is deeply close to my family’s heart. I am committed to ensuring every child has a safe, supportive, and forever family.
There are over 400,000 children in the United States who need a loving home. Nearly 7,500 of those are currently in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. These kids, and the families who foster them, need our help and support.
These children are put in the system through no fault of their own and it’s our responsibility to stand up for them. In my role as co-chair of the Congressional Foster Youth Caucus, we’ve worked hard to push policies that will set foster youth up for success. This includes funding for the John H. Chafee Foster Care Independence Program to assist foster youth in achieving self-sufficiently, and legislation such as the Foster Youth Mentoring Act and the Foster Care Stabilization Act to ensure these children are well supported both mentally and physically.
I want to extend my immense gratitude to those in the community who have made it their mission to support these children including non-profits like J 127 Ministry Durant. I also want to acknowledge the thousands of Oklahomans who have opened their homes and hearts to foster youth or have volunteered their time and resources in countless other capacities.
Foster youth face many challenges, but they are resilient. These youth are the future generation of leaders. They are world changers, helpers, neighbors, educators, entrepreneurs – whatever they want to be. We just have to make sure we help them get there.
