The Choice to Serve

Serving in our nation’s military is a commitment to represent the United States in times of both war and peace.  It is a worthy and honorable sacrifice, not one to be taken lightly.  The men and women who serve in our military are loyal to our flag and protect the freedoms granted to all of us.  No matter the branch, rank, or role, all of our men and women in uniform play an important part in maintaining our nation’s security and defending our way of life.

My office offers the opportunity for high school students or recent high school graduates to apply to be considered for a nomination to one of our military academies.  Each year, I have the honor of nominating a limited number of applicants to four of the five service academies.  The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy all require a congressional nomination from your senator, representative, or directly from the Vice President.  The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional appointment to be accepted.

I strongly encourage any high school student currently in their junior year or recent high school graduates to do a little research and see if serving in one of our branches of the military might be for you.  Following the statistic that 1% of our citizens defend 100% of our freedoms, it’s clear that not everyone is called to the military.  However, I challenge you to discover if being a part of that small part of our population is right for you.

If you or someone you know is interested in applying to one of our country’s great service academies, visit my website at mullin.house.gov/constituent-services to learn more and to find the specifics.  All applications must be submitted to my Muskogee Office by November 9, 2017 in order to be considered.  Still have questions?  Call my Muskogee Office at 918-687-2533 and ask to speak with William Barnes, the military academy coordinator.
